What is it good for?
Lotions are water-based products making water the main ingredient. If you're a label-checker like me, you know that it's often the first ingredient listed. Since lotions are water-based, they require preservatives to prevent mold and bacteria from forming. All products that contain water MUST have a preservative. These preservatives can have harmful effects on our skin.
Lotions are typically comprised of water and oils mixed together using an emulsifier to bind the ingredients. The water in lotion allows it to be hydrating to the skin, which is good because our bodies need water. Due to its lightness, it absorbs into the skin quickly. The oils and other moisturizing agents are what provide your skin with the moisture it needs. Unfortunately, most people who use lotion know that moisture does not last very long (even shorter for those with dry skin) and may find themselves applying more throughout the day.
On the other hand, body butters are made with natural butters such as Shea, Cocoa, Mango, and Kokum. They are often combined with carrier oils like Olive Oil, Grape Seed Oil, Avocado Oil, Jojoba Oil, and Essential Oils like Lavender, Tea Tree, Peppermint, Eucalyptus. Never water. The absence of water also means the absence of preservatives, as they are not needed to sustain blends. Body butters will typically last 6 to 9 months. They are carefully whipped to create a light and airy consistency that melts upon contact with the skin. While it might look like icing, please do not eat it! Even as a natural product, it is not meant for consumption. Once the butters are whipped, the oils are added to help seal and lock in moisture. Body butters are thicker than lotion and because of the natural ingredients used, they also promote healing to the applied areas.
The butters and oils used in body butters penetrate deep into the skin to provide nourishment and moisture that lasts much longer than lotions leaving the skin softer and smoother. This is especially beneficial during winter months when the skin becomes very dry and needs added hydration. People with dryer skin find that body butters provide that nourishment and conditioning their skin needs that lasts all day.
